What do you get when you combine a picturesque setting of mountains and flower-filled valleys with a night of rain and a muddy track? A deep, wet pit in Bozeman, Montana. Located just 3 short hours from the heart of Yellowstone National Park, this city is ripe for mud bogging. With plenty of places to do some off-road bogging, there are quite a few mud bogging enthusiasts. Our entry to Bozeman began a few hours before as we drove through West Yellow stone through the mountains. The temperature dropped from the 80s to the 50s and the sky filled with dark clouds that dropped a downpour on the lush vegetation. As we drove, the rain increased—which is a great thing if you’re mud bogging the next day. The thunder and lightning storms continued throughout the night leaving a very wet pit area at the bog. The pits were deep and the mud definitely challenged all those who dared to enter.
With about 25 years of experience in putting on a mud bog, the Mountaineers 4×4 club sure knows how to put on a show for all the spectators at the fair. Cotton candy isn’t the only sticky thing at the fair. With a single pit that’s 150 feet of mud and muck, this bog puts all trucks to the test. It was evident from the first truck to the last that these Montana competitors are serious about bogging. As I looked around the pit area it was evident that lift kits and big tires were a definite necessity if you even had a hope of making through the pit.
The pit is dug deep into the ground and watered. After it’s given a little time to settle, more dirt and water are added with an excavator. The deft hands of the excavator operator knew just how to dig it up and mix it to create a formidable pit. As each class succumbed to the pit, the excavator would add more dirt and water to the pit and then mix it up to create a more challenging pit for each class as they went. The first three classes had a difficult time mastering the pit with many not succeeding. When a truck would rip through the pit the crowd roared with excitement.
As the day went on, the crowd continued to cheer for the pit, or their favorite truck. The final class that ran seemed to finally give the pit a good run for its money. These trucks were equipped with lift kits and tires that went from 44” on up. As far as modifications were concerned, the big sky was the limit. At that point anything from a paddle tired rail car to a military truck with a diesel engine and 52-inch tractor tires was allowed to compete against the pit.
This day the score would read as follows: pit-1, trucks-0.
Congratulations to the Mountaineers for putting on such a great bog with so many competitors. If you’re up for a great road trip, scenic mountains, and all the mud you can’t handle, head to Bozeman next year and give the mud a challenge.
